The killer application is definitively remote meter reading for energy or for water distribution utlilities. The main reason is because the meters are scattered everywhere and the cost of the data collection is a major issue specially in the case of small clients. Moreover, the two ways communication capability allows the possibility to implement new tarif structures in order to create value for both the supplier and its clients.

Implementation

Of course an optimized hardware, dedicated to the new data communication method, allows cost reductions not only on exploitation costs but on investments as well.

Nevertheless, the very good news is the fact that almost all types of existing products that include a standard modem connected to the PSTN through a wired or a wireless access, can send and may receive data according to Ergylink method. The only thing to do is to update the embedded firmware and to install an Ergylink communication front end anywere in the information system. This additional investment is negligible compared to the savings made on communication costs. The usual recurring costs can be divided by more that ten by using Ergylink method.

The Ergylink solution can be implemented directly by the company  who  will exploit it or it can be  included in the  proposal of  its  supplier of metering systems.
